A Look at the Future Trends of Perfume Bottle Packaging

According to Grand View Research, the global fragrance market will reach $30.61 billion in 2023, and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 5.4% from 2024 to 2030. The growing demand and consumption of processed foods, personal care and cosmetics around the world will drive the development of the perfume market. Rising disposable incomes in emerging economies such as India and China, coupled with population growth, will also expand the industry's demand for personal care and beauty products. The busy lifestyles of developing and developed countries continue to drive demand for processed foods and beverages, thereby driving demand for fragrances...

As demand for niche brands and high-concentration perfumes grows, perfume sales will increase by 11% in 2022; in early 2023, the category has achieved double-digit growth.

“The fragrance category is booming, especially in the U.S., with sales far exceeding pre-pandemic levels,” said Sheherazade Chamlou, VP of beauty sales for the Americas at SGD Pharma, a French pharmaceutical glass packaging company.

The growth in fragrance sales means more demand for perfume packaging. “Glass is the material of choice for high-quality fragrances, and nothing can match its elegance, clarity and sparkle,” said Chamlou. “It’s an antioxidant and light-blocking material, and it’s infinitely recyclable.”

What type of glass bottle is needed for perfume bottle packaging?

John Schofield, president of Screen Tech/SprayeTech, a U.S. glass decoration supplier, said: "The market demand for customized and existing styles of perfume bottles is on the rise. Perfume brands are choosing the same packaging bottle for multiple sub-categories, not just for the same series of products."

Douglas Thompson, vice president of marketing and product development at PGP Glass USA, a U.S. glass bottle supplier, said: "Fragrance brands are taking advantage of the 'premiumization' trend and developing rapidly. First-tier brands and luxury brands are increasingly demanding thick-bottomed glass bottles."

Mark Bellard, president of Siloa, a supplier that designs and develops standard perfume bottle packaging components, said: "Research has shown that perfume consumers are willing to spend more on something beautiful but unique. In addition to being a product packaging, perfume bottles also have ornamental value. Brands hope to design more distinctive perfume packaging to attract consumers."

Decoration Options and Future Market Trends

Fragrance brands use a variety of ways to decorate bottles to connect with consumers and convey their aesthetics.

Thompson said: "Some brands in the market are gradually moving from metallization to textured finishes. More and more well-known brands require minimal decoration, while affordable luxury brands tend to favor bright colors, personalization, nature-centric prints and earth tones."

Thompson also pointed out that designers are more focused on using visual elements to tell the brand story rather than choosing other elements that do not seem to match the brand image. Our core goal is to enhance brand value. The product packaging is attractive and visually complements the brand image. From product design to packaging decoration, it is closely integrated with customer concerns, allowing consumers to understand the brand while better displaying the product.

PGP Glass provides a full range of decoration services and has dedicated equipment for advanced glass decoration techniques, including printing, hot foil stamping, coating, frosting, decals, accessory bonding and metallization decoration. “We offer a diverse portfolio of designs that can be easily customized to meet a brand’s custom requirements. Decorative options include spraying, screen printing, pad printing, hot stamping, acid etching, metallized decoration and more,” said Thompson.

“Opaque matte colors and crisp translucent colors are the most common on the market,” said Schofield. “Screen Tech/SprayeTech’s water-based spray and organic printing capabilities provide brands with an environmentally friendly way to achieve these looks, and our UV-protective spray coatings are increasingly showing interest. Unique color matching and mixing capabilities provide customers with faster time to market.”

Digital printing offers fragrance brands more decorative versatility. “Digital printing has no color restrictions, and colorful patterns can be printed directly from electronic files,” said Chamlou. “The personalization and customization options of digital decoration open up a new world of possibilities.”

Refillable and Lightweight Perfume Bottle Packaging

Traditional glass bottle packaging can be heavy, which is a disadvantage of this type of environmentally friendly packaging. Lightweight perfume bottle packaging provide an effective solution for perfumes.

Verescence, a French glass bottle manufacturer for the cosmetics and perfume industry, has launched the Moon and Gem refillable lightweight glass bottles.

Designed in collaboration with renowned designer Thierry De Baschmakoff, Moon and Gem showcases Verescence's technical expertise in manufacturing lightweight perfume bottle packaging with complex shapes. "This product is the perfect combination of luxury and sustainability," said Céline Le Marre, marketing and project manager at Verescence.

The 100 ml Moon bottle weighs 106 grams, while the 100 ml Gem bottle weighs only 97 grams. The Moon bottle features an artistic irregular shape with an off-center neck design. The light blue body of the Gem bottle is a unique octagonal geometric shape with a sharp angular design, looking like a precious gem. "The bottles offer a 100% eco-design concept with a spherical mono-material cap made by Minelli Spa, an Italian manufacturer of premium wood accessories," said Céline Le Marre.

Vitro, Mexico's largest glass producer, has a new lightweight bottle design called Ligia.

Ligia means light, explained Victor Rodríguez, Vitro's vice president of global sales and marketing. The eco-glass range features a minimalist refillable bottle and wooden cap.

Perfume Caps and Boxes

Pairing a perfume bottle packaging with a gorgeous cap always catches shoppers’ eyes and delights consumers with every application.

French cosmetics brand Christian Louboutin Beauty’s Puig Loubimar fragrance was named Package of the Year at The Fragrance Foundation Awards, paired with a luxurious metal cap produced by TNT Global, a perfume cap supplier covering Asia, Europe and the United States.

“For us, the push for perfume cap design is the same as other categories – meeting sustainable demands,” said Jack Albanese, director of new business development at Lombardi Design & Manufacturing, a US design, engineering and injection molding supplier that specializes in a variety of premium caps. “We are trying to replace traditional unsustainable resins with processed post-consumer materials. Historically, many famous perfume box designs have tried to mimic the clarity and sculpted shapes of glass. Until now, sustainable resin options have been limited.” Lombardi has obtained ISCC+ certification and can provide thick-walled, transparent caps produced from processed post-consumer PET and other resins to meet customer requirements.

Siloa has a new range of wooden bottle caps produced from sustainable forests. “When combined with our removable 100% PCR inner cap, the entire cap is suitable for environmentally friendly disposal and recycling,” Bellard said.

The rise of testers and travel kits

As consumers shift from physical stores to online, there is a growing demand for miniature fragrances, testers, sample kits and travel sizes.

Fenty Beauty, a brand launched by Kendo Brand, an innovative beauty brand incubator under LVMH, and singer Rihanna, launched a 10 ml travel size of eau de toilette for the summer travel season.

Travel-sized fragrances are also popular because they are cheaper to purchase. Fragrance brands know that consumers tend to buy smaller sizes when shopping online. “Department store perfume counters are here to stay, and the sample-centric e-commerce model will continue to drive the fragrance market,” said SGD’s Chamlou. “Consumers are more willing to try new fragrances, and there is a high demand for perfume sample packages, and the number of perfume subscription boxes has also increased significantly.”

SGD Pharma has also added mini perfume sample kits to its growing fragrance packaging offerings. The supplier’s pharmaceutical-grade vials come in 1.5 ml, 2 ml and 2.6 ml sizes. “They come in 19 solid colors, clear or custom ceramic screen-printed options. These new sample bottles are a big factor in the growing demand for portable fragrances,” Chamlou said.

Siloa offers a travel-size refillable dual-tip dispenser.

“Brands can offer refills in stores or by mail,” Bellard said. “Indie fragrance brands tend to be more versatile in their construction and are open to pursuing innovative ideas more quickly, like this refillable perfume bottle packaging solution.”

Glass Perfume Bottle Production

Where are perfume bottle packaging made? Here’s a look at the progress and capacity of some of the largest glass manufacturers.

Mexican glass packaging supplier Vitro Envases invested $70 million in a new furnace. "With a capacity of 230 tons of glass per day, the new furnace increases our ability and flexibility to meet the growing demands of our customers and deliver high value-added products through cutting-edge technology and sustainable production processes," said Shlomo Frymerman, head of Vitro's glass container business unit.

The supplier's facility in Toluca, Mexico, one of the world's largest glass packaging plants, is designed and built using cutting-edge technology to optimize energy consumption and minimize CO2 emissions, producing glass packaging for cosmetics, premium alcohol and specialty products.

PGP Glass's 64 production lines and 11 furnaces produce more than 550 million high-quality perfume bottle packaging per year for customers in more than 50 countries. "We have the world's largest production capacity of 705 tons per day, dedicated to beauty and perfume bottles," said Sanjay Tiwari, CEO of PGP Glass USA. "Our world-class facility features top-notch design capabilities, a creative design and innovation studio, and a state-of-the-art CNC machine shop dedicated to making perfect molds."

SGD Pharma is one of the leading glass packaging manufacturers known for innovation. The company’s factory in Zhanjiang, China, is a full-fledged beauty product center. It has decoration options including painting, frosting, silk-screening, coloring and hot stamping. Chamlou said: “The local R&D team in Zhanjiang is committed to innovation in the beauty market and has continuously organized decoration seminars over the past decade to showcase innovations including digital printing on glass, RGB printing and PVD coating.

SMCG (Somang Glass), a Korean glass container manufacturer, is known for adding a high level of PCR to each glass bottle. Its sales director James Jin said: “We use 60% PCR to add to the glass, which is currently the highest level in the world. It paved the way for us to use PCR glass in Korea. ”

Vercence has an annual production capacity of 600 million bottles. The company has more than 120 years of experience in glass manufacturing. It has production bases and finishing production bases in France, Spain, the United States, and South Korea, and can provide innovative perfume bottle packaging solutions.

Perfume Bottle Design Trends

-Classic, Colorful, and Gorgeous Decorations

There are many ways that brands can use design to ensure that perfume bottle packaging convey brand information or the unique fragrance inside the bottle.

Flooid, a genderless perfume launched by American skincare brand Non Gender Specific, uses a classic cylindrical glass bottle; Kate Spade's Chérie perfume bottle is colorful and modern; German fashion company MCM has designed a unique shape for Onyx perfume with gorgeous decorative details.

All three brands use colors and design elements that reflect the fragrance. Non Gender Specific, a "genderless" brand founded by Andrew Glass, launched Flooid in 2019, and then redesigned and re-launched it to the market in March 2023. The cylindrical glass bottle looks modern, and the amber color of the bottle reflects the warm amber flavor of the perfume. Others include lavender, patchouli, sweet orange, grapefruit, bergamot, white musk, oud, fresh moss and vetiver fragrances. The bottle comes in a plantable cardboard box.

Earlier in 2023, Inter Parfums-owned brand Kate Spade launched Cherie. The colorful red pop art-style bottle represents the fruity floral scent, paired with a pink spherical translucent cap. Contains raspberry, citrus, sweet pea, jasmine, musk and white wood fragrance.

Another fragrance brand of Inter Parfums Group, MCM Onyx, is a vegan fragrance made with more than 79% biodegradable ingredients. 89% of its ingredients are produced using green chemistry principles, and more than 72% of sustainably sourced "Naturals Together" ingredients help to have a positive social impact in communities around the world.

Like other fragrances from the brand, the Onyx bottle looks like it is decorated with faux leather. The brand said: "Onyx reimagines our Stark backpack fragrance bottle in a gunmetal grey hue. Visetos is the most recognizable motif of the MCM brand - the bottle is decorated with laurel leaves, a symbol of victory, honor and bravery. The front is decorated with an engraved nameplate, just like the number plate on a backpack."

"This design is at the heart of the MCM brand and embodies the spirit of free travel. We are proud of this new fragrance, which takes our 21st century digital nomads on a journey of transcendence from ingredients to emotions, from scent to emotion." Sabine Brunner, President of MCM said.
